Course Description:
This course is for students who have completed two or more years of Japanese or have reached an intermediate level of Japanese, and want to continue to build a higher level of proficiency. Students will have an opportunity to engage with community projects of importance and relevance, while examining issues of justice, compassion, diversity and social responsibility. Students have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of Japanese language and culture through their community service and develop communication skills through discussions, reflection essays and presentations.

Reflective Narrative: How awesome it is to have a class, which truly helps us develop our critical thinking skills not only in our target language but also in our native language. I completed Service Learning in Fall 2015 of my Senior year at CSUMB. Through my community service, I have been able to participate in a multilingual and multicultural community. In this community, we were able to teach Japanese language and culture to elementary students. By teaching these students Japanese language and culture, we have been able to expose them to a culture that is drastically different than their own. By doing this, we are able to allow the students to see similarities and differences within each culture, which in return can help reduce ethnocentrism and prejudice,
Through presentational and interpersonal modes of communication, I was able to strengthen my proficiency in the Japanese language. By collaborating with Japanese native speakers and writing site reflections in the target language, we were able to cross check each others use of the foreign language. Although quite intensive at times due to the content of some of the topics being discussed, it pushed me to think critically individually and as a group so that we could collaborate on topics of interest.
