Reflective Narrative:
1.1
Both Japanese 320 and 404 were taught in Japanese at CSUMB whereas Japanese 3B was taught at Dokkyo University. These classes had discussions that were held in the target language. Through presentational and interpersonal modes of communication, I was able to strengthen my proficiency in the Japanese language. By collaborating with Japanese native speakers and writing site reflections in the target language, we were able to cross check each others use of the foreign language. Although quite intensive at times due to the content of some of the topics being discussed, it pushed me to think critically as a group and individually so that we could collaborate on topics of interest. The challenge I had in the class was using a academic level of Japanese. Although I was used to writing in that method at Dokkyo by way of writing sakubun (essays) in Japanese, I was not prepared for the frequency of writing we would have to do each week. Although challenging, it helped to increase my competency in writing. Japanese 320,404 and 3B all helped increase presentational communication skills, for more information, please click on each link for more information

1.2
JAPN 404 helped fulfill the second part of this MLO. I took this course in Spring 2016 at CSUMB and it helped to increase my knowledge of the advanced structure of Japanese language through work on my capstone project. In this class, we used the following workbook: 中級日本語学習者対象小論文への12のステップ, This workbook contained 12 steps on how to write, present and gather data for the purpose of completing a research project such as Capstone. In addition, with Sekine Sensei's guidance, we were instructed on how to properly use and produce "Academic" Japanese. We conducted presentations so we could practice intonation and to insure we could flow and sound similar to native speakers. To compare and analyze the structural differences between Japanese and English, my capstone partner and I worked on our Abstract in English and in Japanese. This was a great exercise to conduct, because there were times when I would have to think of better ways to translate high academic English into Japanese that was comprehensible. Please see the sample of our Abstract in Japanese and in English. that was uploaded below.
