Course Description:
An introductory scrutiny of major Japanese directors and genres with attention to film composition, choices of subject and character, ideas of the cinematic, and the relationship of cinema to Japanese culture and society. Students will analyze and critique films.
Discussion of films will deal with the production of their historical, social, and cultural context, as well as issues dealing with gender, inequality, and social change.
Reflective Narrative:
In this class, we watched various classic to modern Japanese films. Films by popular directors such as Akira Kurosowa and Yasujiro Ozu were watched and we were required to write weekly "J-Cinema" reports. In these reports we analyzed elements of Japanese culture, discussed the storyline, music and characters/scenes in the movie. In addition to these elements, we were to relate these reflections to our life experiences and also rate the movies on a scale of 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest) and give our reasons for these ratings. Attached are samples I am providing from this course. I am attaching samples from my mid-term report (Kurosawa), my J-Cinema weekly report(Akahige) and my final essay.
