Reflective Narrative:
2.1
For This MLO, I was able to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for Japanese culture by taking the following classes taught by Professor Takahashi, Japanese Cinema, Japanese Literature in Translation and Social Issues in Japan. All of these courses contributed to helping me develop stronger interculturality. These classes were all taught in English, however many of these courses contained romanized Japanese words that I could memorize and practice to continue to develop my Japanese vocabulary word bank. My favorite class out of all of the courses was Japanese cinema. Growing up in Las Vegas, I had the opportunity to be exposed to various cultures, but there were not many Japanese in my community so I was not exposed to the various art forms such as music, literature and film. This class exposed me to one of the greatest Japanese film directors, Kurosawa. His visual expertise, his eye for great talent and his overall uniqueness is what made me like him overall. The film Akahige (Red Beard) was my favorite film as I truly admired the main actor in the film, Toshiro Mifune. You will find a sample of the paper I wrote by clicking on the button "Akahige" below.
2.2
Japanese Literature and Social Issues in Japan helped to develop my critical thinking and analytical skills so that I could compare Japanese culture with other cultures including my own.. In Japanese Literature, I wrote a 6-7 page paper which focused on traditional literary works and how they shaped Japanese culture throughout time. You will find a copy of the sample below by clicking on Final Essay. Many of the cultural classes I took were focused on the positive aspects of Japanese culture so when I enrolled in Japanese social issues, I was not really prepared for some of the topics we would discuss such as Hikikomori which is about Japanese men who shut themselves off from society and have very little social interaction with people. I am aware that all cultures have social issues, but this class helped me understand many deep issues including the Educational system, which I chose to focus on in my capstone.
